Hannu Harkola composes mostly helpmates and is Honorary Master of the FIDE for Chess Compositions.
During the period 1999–2012 he was the webmaster of the site of the Permanent Commission for Chess Composition (PCCC), and then of the World Federation for Chess Composition (WFCC).
He was Secretary of PCCC from 1974 until 1986 and First Vice-President of PCCC (1994–1998) and WFCC (2002–2018).
