Paul Faragó and his book |
Paul Farago published his first study at the age of 13. He won the gold medal at the Munich Chess Olympiads in 1936 and was International Judge for studies. He held the chess study column of both magazines "Revista Română de Şah" and "Magyar Sakkvilág". He was renowned for his very difficult compositions, where Black often has hidden possibilities and White prevails after a tough battle.
Farago exposed his ideas regarding endgame studies in his book "Idei noi în şahul artistic" (New ideas in chess composition, 1956).
His studies being hard to solve, we propose you the following fourmover:

Martin Villemson (04-04-1897 - 22-06-1933) Estonian composer
Martin Villemson was a chessplayer and the editor of the Estonian chess magazine Eesti Maleilm.
He composed mostly twomovers. He inspired Paul Keres to take up chess and chess problems.
(Note: we have found four different birth dates and we chose the most current one:
a) 02-11-1897 according to Margus Sööt's 2006 article in Eesti Maleeliit; his source was the article "Kehakultuur" 14/1968 which can be downloaded here, but no other Estonian source mentions this date.
b) 04-04-1897 according to the Estonian Wikipedia and Eesti Spordi Biograafiline Leksikon and also according to our WFCC source.
c) 09-11-1897 according to the article Martin Villemson's Gambit, chess.com 2015 (many other sites seem to have used this article as their primary source, but as the author commented in 2020 "there was no way to verify" [the dates])
d) 27-10-1897 according to the genealogical site geni.com
Only a birth certificate could settle the matter!)

What year was Paul Faragó awarded an IM title?
ReplyDeleteI presume you must mean IM of otb Chess, because in chess composition, I find only the title of International Judge (awarded 1956).
Perhaps I'm wrong, but it does seem a pattern, where this blog has mistaken the IJ title for an IM of Chess Composition.
So, if you can site the year, I'd find it very helpful. Thanks.
The mistake is not exactly ours. The source was : http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1l_Farag%C3%B3
Delete"1960 wurde er Internationaler Preisrichter für Schachkomposition. Sechs Jahre nach seinem Tod bekam er von der FIDE den Titel Internationaler Meister der Schachkomposition."
In fact, as you say, the WFCC website gives 1956 for the title of IJ. As for the title of IM, it does not appear on WFCC website, but Farago got 26 points in the FIDE Album and that's probably the reason for the above assumption.
Yes, he does have 26 points in the FIDE Album -- just more than enough to be awarded the title of IM (for chess composition); however, he was never awarded this title. I don't know why, exactly, he was not awarded this title (perhaps somebody can provide info). It seems likely that he passed away just a few years prior to his points exceeding the cutoff -- I don't believe that would prevent him from being award this title (otherwise, it would seem a sad statement on the Album system). It's also possible that he rejected these titles. In any event, I don't believe 26 points in the Album should be presumed as the equivalent of the IM title (regardless of the fact that he appears to have earned this distinction).
ReplyDeleteMr.Begley was right. In 2012 Paul Farago did not hold the IM title because at that time these awards were not given posthumously.
DeleteNevertheless, WFCC lately considered qualified (ie.with the necessary'Album points') applications for posthumous awards if the application is made by the composer's country. So, at the Belgrade meeting in August 2016, Paul Farago was finally awarded the title of International Master of Composition.
It was only a matter of time before his title was actually awarded. But what are 4 years or 46?
