Hans Klüver learnt chess at 13 and composed his first problem one year later. He has been interested in retroanalytical problems and in fairy chess: for instance he promoted Dynamo chess and Marseillais chess.
He also invented the concept of metacritical move.

Klüver held chess problem columns in 16 newspapers (in Die Welt during 40 years, from 1946 until 1989!) and wrote more than 150 articles, as well as several books, among which the famous "Erich Brunner - ein Künstler und Deuter des Schachproblems" (1958). More details in German on Wikipedia, thanks to Rainer Staudte.

John Odin Howard Taylor (02-03-1837 - 15-05-1890) British composer

Taylor's Folly [Source]

Doesn't it look like a chess Rook?
The Pinebanks tower was built by John Odin Howard Taylor in Whitlingham. Here you may read that "the tower was climbed by Queen Kapiolani of Hawaii in 1887. She was in the country to celebrate Victoria’s Golden Jubilee". It must have been a special pleasure for Taylor to be able to welcome a Queen at his Rook.

Taylor was a chess player and direct mate composer who also wrote the book "Chess Skirmishes" (1889).

Antalya 2008

Michal Dragoun is a solving Grandmaster, an International Judge for helpmates and fairies, but also a very talented composer (GM in composing since Kobe 2012 WCCC). He published more than 1000 problems, of which 600 were awarded. He mostly composed helpmates, but a fair proportion of his works comprises fairy helpmates or helpselfmates. A quick search in a database shows he has won more than 220 prizes. He won the 2004-1006 Fairies WCCI and shared the 3rd place of the 2004-2006 Helpmates WCCI.

He was the editor of Šachová skladba. He was also the editor of the helpmate section of the Slovak magazine Pat a Mat, before Juraj Lörinc took over (by the way, the originals published in Pat a Mat can be seen on Jan Golha's site, along with their solutions).

A few of his helpmates will give an idea of his talent:
