John Brown published his problems as “J. B. of Bridport” and was one of the outstanding chess problem composers of the nineteenth century.
John D. Beasley made a book review of "John Brown / The forgotten chess composer?" by Brian Gosling (2011) which can be read here.
Above is what may be John Brown's only known portrait. Michael Clapham eruditely recounts on Chess Book Chats that the photograph was taken from opposite page 28 of The Chess Problem by H. Weenink, 1926 which took it from Chess Champions of England, a photographic board of 64 miniature portraits of chess champions published by H. F. L. Meyer in 1871.
